It's good to think we are reducing our carbon footprint but in a financially restricted world we live in today, it's important to know in most cases renewable energy products will pay for themselves, in time, this will be helped by, in the case of producing excess electricity it can be sold back to the National Grid.

In the case of thermal production, for heating and hot water for example, some energy companies will pay you for your own thermal production because they are being forced to produce at least 15% by renewable methods by 2010. This means now your production has a value to them for which they will pay you to offset against their obligation to the government and avoid being penalised by them.

For example, an energy company called Good Energy will actually calculate what they will pay based on the size of your solar panels, which way they face and the size of your water cylinder.

There are issues regarding grants and planning permission but it is becoming easier to overcome as more and more pressure is put on us to find alternative sources of renewable energy.
